My Favorite Music Videos of The Year

When putting together a list of your favorite music videos of the year, it is hard to not just list every music video from Beyoncé’s Lemonade. However, I tried my hardest not to do that and I put together this list of my five favorites from the year so far (in no particular order.)

  1. “Formation” – Beyoncé | Coming out early in the year, “Formation” set the bar high for the year in music videos. It is a perfectly crafted political and artistic message that brought the world’s attention to Bey’s iconic visual album.1160753
  2. Side to Side” – Ariana Grande ft. Nicki Minaj | In this highly saturated exercise fantasy, two of the biggest names in popular music feed off of each others chemistry like best friends. The costuming and set design set the song off perfectly.01-ariana-grande-nicki-minaj-side-to-side-vid-2016-billboard-1548
  3. Shout Out to My Ex” – Little Mix | In the British girl band’s first single off of their upcoming album, they do not shy away from controversial lyrics. This video, however, focuses on the beauty of female friendship in the wake of a heartbreak.mgid-ao-image-mtv-com-210906
  4. Work From Home” – Fifth Harmony ft. Ty Dolla $ign | With over a billion views, “Work From Home” is one of the most talked about videos of the year. The five women in Fifth Harmony dance among sculpted handymen in this upbeat video.fifth-harmony-work-from-home-ft-ty-dolla-ign-video-still-2
  5. Starboy” – The Weeknd | The Weeknd’s Abel Tesfaye was once known for his interesting hair shape, but not anymore. In the video for “Starboy”, a freshly cut Tesfaye actually robs and murders his former self.roe9jreou70tg7fuqphs
  6. Lush Life (Alternate Version)” – Zara Larsson | Larsson already had a video for this summery tune, but released another one this year. The brightly colored video focuses on the choreography more than anything else, making for a fun few
  7. Good As Hell” – Lizzo | In Lizzo’s breakout song she talks about feeling herself. In the video, she goes through the process of getting to that point. Filmed in a beauty salon, the video features women of color getting their hair done and feeling good as hell with the finished product.screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-10-36-37-pm
  8. UUU” – KAYE | In her first venture with the stage name ‘KAYE’, Charlene Kaye achieves her most bubblegum pop song ever with “UUU.” Originally written for Carly Rae Jepsen, Kaye decided to keep it for herself. The video features just Kaye and two dancers in a simplistic setting, allowing the song to be the main event.landscape-1471720865-uuu-still
  9. Tag You’re It/Milk and Cookies Double Feature” – Melanie Martinez | Martinez accomplishes her classic creepy toddler tone in the video for two songs from her debut album Crybaby. The video shows a kidnapped Martinez powerfully escaping her captor.melanie-martinez-tag-youre-itmilk-and-cookies-double-feature_9468443-6119_1800x945
  10. Cranes in The Sky” – Solange | It has been quite a year for the Knowles sisters. Solange recently released her critically acclaimed A Seat at the Table. “Cranes in The Sky” is a beautifully shot visual companion to a beautiful song.acc320f6
